Question 998255: Æschere, Beowulf, Cwene, and Durwyn were dividing up a bag of gold coins from a dragon's hoard.
Æschere took three more than one quarter of the coins in the bag. Then Beowulf took two more than one third of the coins remaining in the bag. Next Cwene took four more than one half of the coins remaining in the bag. This left eighteen coins for Durwyn. How many coins were in the bag?

Call them a,b,c, and d.
d = 18
c must have taken 26, since four more than half of 44 is 26, and leaves 18, so
c = 26
b must have taken 25, since two more than one third of 69 is 25, leaving 44, so
b = 25
a must have taken 27, since three more than one quarter of 96 is 27, leaving 69, so
a = 27
Adding them up gives
27+25+26+18 = 96 coins
Good puzzle.
