C=Chris's age; S=Sam's age=C+14
.
S+3=3(C+3) Substitute for S.
(C+14)+3=3C+9
17-9=3C-C
8=2C
4=C Chris is 4 years old
S=C+14=4+14=18 ANSWER: Sam is 18 years old.

18+3=3(4+3)

21=21

Chris is 14 years younger than Sam. In 3 years, Sam will be 3 times as old as Chris. How old is Sam now
Let Sam's current age, be S

Then Chris' current age = S - 14

We then get: S + 3 = 3(S - 14 + 3)

S + 3 = 3(S - 11)

S + 3 = 3S - 33 

S - 3S = - 33 - 3

- 2S = - 36
