Question 962616: 3 years ago, Emma was 1/6 as old as her mom. 11 years from now, Emma will be 2/5 as old as her mom. How old is Emma now?
Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
e = Emma's present age
m = Mom's present age
:
Write an equation for each statement, simply as much as possible
:
3 years ago, Emma was 1/6 as old as her mom.
e - 3 = (m-3)
multiply both sides by 6
6(e-3) = m - 3
6e - 18 = m - 3
6e - 18 + 3 = m
6e - 15 = m
:
11 years from now, Emma will be 2/5 as old as her mom.
e + 11 = (m+11)
multiply both sides by 5
5(e+11) = 2(m+11)
5e + 55 = 2m + 22
5e + 55 - 22 = 2m
5e + 33 = 2m
replace m with (6e-15)
5e + 33 = 2(6e - 15)
5e + 33 = 12e - 30
33 + 30 = 12e - 5e
63 = 7e
e = 63/7
e = 9 yrs is Emma's age

You should confirm this, find Mom's age (6e-15), check in both statements
