Kayla is 9 years older than twice Hannah's age. If the difference in their ages is 16, how old is Kayla? How old is Hannah?

H=Hannah's age; K=Kayla's age=2H+9yrs
K-H=16yrs Add H to each side.
K=H+16yrs Use this to substitute for K.
K=2H+9yrs Substitute for K from above.
H+16yrs=2H+9yrs Subtract (H+9) from each side.
7yrs=H ANSWER 1: Hannah is 7 years old.
K=H+16yrs=7yrs+16yrs=23yrs ANSWER 2: Kayla is 23 years old.
CHECK:
K=2H+9yrs
23yrs=2(7yrs)+9yrs
23yrs=14yrs+9yrs
23yrs=23yrs
