Susan is twice as old as Mary. In five years, their ages will total 49. How old is each today?
------------
Equation:
s = 2m
s+5 + m+5 = 49
------
s = 2m
s + m = 39
----------------
Substitute for "s" and solve for "m"::
2m + m = 39
3m = 39
m = 13 yrs (Mary's age now)
--------------
Solve for "s"::
s = 2m
s = 2(13)
s = 26 yrs (Susan's age now)
--------------
