let f = father's age
let d = daughter's age
:
Write an equation for each statement
:
A father is four times as old as his daughter.
f = 4d
:
The sum of the squares of their ages is 1088. Find their ages.
f^2 + d^2 = 1088
replace f with 4d
(4d)^2 + d^2 = 1088
16d^2 + d^2 = 1088
17d^2 = 1088
d^2 = 1088/17
d^2 = 64
d =
