B= Bernie's age;B+1=2(B-7) (B+1 is Bernie next year, B-7= Bernie 7 yrs ago)
B+1=2B-14 add 14 to each side
B+1+14=2B-14+14
B+15=2B subtract B from each side
B+15-B=2B=B
15=B ANSWER Bernie is 15
CHECK
B+1=2(B-7)
15+1=2(15=7)
16=2(8)
16=16

Let x = Bernie's present age
x + 1 = Bernie's age after one year
x - 7 = Bernie's age seven years ago
Bernie's age after a year will be equal to twice the age he was seven years ago
THEREFORE
x + 1 = 2( x - 7 )
x + 1 = 2x - 14
x = 15

You can do it with or without algebra.  Here are both ways.

Without algebra:

Next year he'll be twice as old as he was 8 years ago, which means he'll
be 16 next year, so he's 15 this year.


With algebra:

B+1 = 2(B-7)

Solve that and get B=15.
