Let x and y represent the son's and father's ages respectively 

 y - 4 = 3(x-4)  0r y = 

......

y + 5 = 2(x+5)

(3x-8) + 5 = 2x + 10

x = 13, son's age.  Father is 31 

And...checking

27 = 3(9)  and 36 = 2(18)
