m + f = 40
m+3 = (1/2)(f+3)

Substitute for "m" and solve for "f"::
40-f+3 = (1/2)(f+3)
43-f = (1/2)(f+3)
86-2f = f+3
3f = 83

f = 27 yrs 8 mts (Flo's age now)

Solve for "m"::
m + f = 40
m + 27 2/3 = 40
