Adam is 24 years older than his son, Jessie. Four years from now, Jessie will be 2/5 of his fathers age at that time. What is Adams present age?
-----------------
Equations::
a = s + 24
s+4 = (2/5)(a+4)
-------
Substitute for "a" and solve for "s"::
s+4 = (2/5)(s+24+4)
----
5s + 20 = 2s + 56
3s = 36
son = Jessie = 12 yrs old now
---------------
Solve for "a"
a = s+24
adam = father = 12+24 = 36 yrs old now

Answer by ewatrrr(24785) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x Jesse' age
4 years from now
(x+4) = (2/5)(x + 24 + 4)
5(x+4) = 2(x+28)
3x = 36
x = 12, Jesse' age. Adam is 36
And ...checking..4 yrs from now
16 = (2/5)40
