in x years the daughter will be 8 + x
in x years the mother will be 3 times as old as the daughter.
your formula is:
42 + x = 3 * (8 + x)
simplify to get:
42 + x = 24 + 3x
subtract 3x from both sides of the equation and subtract 42 from both sides of the equation to get:
x - 3x = 24 - 42
simplify to get:
-2x = -18
divide both sides of the equation by -2 to get:
x = 9
in 9 years the mother will be 51 years old.
in 9 years the daughter will be 17 years old.
