To solve this, first represent the words in terms of mathematical equations.
Let F = Present Age of Father
Let S = Present Age of Son

The first sentence is: "the age of the father is three more than 3 times the age of his son."
This can be represented as an equation as follows:
Equation #1: F=3S

The second sentence is "3 years hence father's age will be 10 years more than twice the age of the son"
This can be represented as an equation as follows:
Equation #2: F+3=2S+10
---------------------
So, now you have 2 equations and 2 unknowns. Anytime you can have a situation where you have as many equations as unknowns, you can solve the problem.
