"Eight is my lucky number. Eight years ago I was eight times the
age of my son. Today the sum of our ages is 52 - you tell me how old I am."

Let mine and my son's current ages be M, and S, respectively
Then we can say that: M - 8 = 8(S - 8)_____M - 8 = 8S - 64
M - 8S = - 64 + 8____M - 8S = - 56 ------ eq (i)
Also, M + S = 52_______S = 52 - M ------- eq (ii)
M - 8S = - 56 ------ eq (i)
M - 8(52 - M) = - 56 ------- Substituting 52 - M for S in eq (i)
M - 416 + 8M = - 56
9M = - 56 + 416
9M = 360
M, or my age =
