Answer by Alan3354(69443) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Sarah is 30 years old. She is twice as old as her friend Bill and Bill is 5 times as old as his sister Jane.
Jane’s mom is 12 times older than Jane. What is the age difference between Jane’s mom and Sarah?
--------
Bill is 15
Jane is 3
-----
12 times older = 13 times as old, so Jane's mom is 39
39 - 30 = 9 years
========================
The answer expected is 6. The author of the problem thinks 12x older is the same as 12x as old.
If that's true, then what is 1x older? the same age?
1x older = an increase of 100% = 2x as old.

There are math problems (this one is simple), and there are language problems.
If this is an online class and you answer 9, you'll be marked wrong.
---
If you have an instructor and can discuss it, then answer 9 years.

What you learn from this is that dummies write math books and math lessons.
