Question 843147: a father is four times as old as his son. in 8 years he will be 3 times as old. how old will his son be
Answer by LinnW(1048) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
set s = son's age , f = father's age
f = 4s
f+8 = 3(s+8)
substitute 4s for f
4s + 8 = 3s + 24
add -3s to each side
s + 8 = 24
add -8 to each side
s = 16
so f = 4*16 = 64
Let's verify f+8 = 3(s+8)
64+8 =? 3(16+8)
72 =? 3(24)
72 = 71
So we know the son's age is 16 and the father is 64
