Question 832591: A man is 3 years less than 5 times his sons age. The sum of their ages 37. Determine the fathers age.
Answer by thejackal(72)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the son's age be s, therefore the
Function of the Man's age = 5s - 3
thus (5s-3)+s = 37
simplifies to 6s - 3 = 37, 6s = 40; thus the sons age s = (40/6)
therefore the fathers age is 5(40/6) - 3 = (91/3) years
remember to leave your answer in fractions to maintain precision otherwise, if if you round off you will get rounding errors that lead to the wrong answer.
to confirm,
(91/3)+(40/6) = (222/6) exactly = 37 years
