Let x be the number of years until mother is twice as old as Lowell
Soooooo
36+x=2(14+x)
36+x=28+2x subtract x and also 28 from each side
36-28+x-x=28-28+2x-x
8=x
In eight years mother will be twice as old as Lowell

36+8=2(14+8)
44=2(22)
44=44
