t + 5 = 3t - 27

Let number of years = x

x+5=3(x-9)

Open brackets

x+5=3x-27

Collect like terms

x-3x=-27-5

-2x=-32

Divide by -2 both sides

Therefore x=16 initial age
Substitute x by 16 to the equation for current years
16+5=3(16-9)
Apply BODMAS by opening brackets first
16+5=3(7)
21=21
Therefore RHS=LHS thus making current Years = 21
