With a reluctance to reveal something so important, Susan said that they were both in their twenties. The clerk, however, insisted on more specific information so, David added that they both had the same birthday, and that he was four times as old as Susan was when he was three times as old as Susan was when he was twice as old as Susan was. At this point, the clerk fainted, whereupon the couple snatched up the license, hurried off to the preacher�s, and lived happily ever after. When the clerk came to and realized that he would have to complete his records some way or other he began to do a little figuring, and before long had found out how old the two were.
