When assigning variables make the letter you choose something that makes sense. For instance, let's let "t" represent Tim's age, and likewise let "m" represent Mel's age. I think this is the way you meant to represent it in the question. With that said, we can represent twice Mel's age as 2m, and 5 years older than that would be 2m+5. We say that Tim's age is equal to this expression, and another way we represent Tim's age is "t".
Thus t = 2m + 5.
