= Age of father
= Age of son
= father's age in 9 years
= son's age in 9 years
----------------------
given:
(1)
(2)
-------------------------------
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2)
(2)
(2)
(2)
(2)
and, since
(1)
(1)
(1)
The father is 27 and the son is 3
-------------
check:
In 9 years, father is 36 and son is 12
father is
OK

Let age of father, and son be F and S, respectively

Then: F = 9S ---- eq (i)

In 9 years, father's age then = F + 9, and son's will be S + 9

Since in 9 years he (father) will be only be three times as old as his son, then we can say that: F + 9 = 3(S + 9)

F + 9 = 3S + 27 ----- F - 3S = 18 ------ eq (ii)

9S - 3S = 18 ------- Substituting 9S for F in eq (ii)

6S = 18

S, or son's current age = , or

F = 9(3) ------ Substituting 3 for S in eq (i)

F, or father's current age =

You can do the check!!

A man is nine times as old as his son. In nine years, he will be only three times as old as his son. How old are each now?
Please use the variables:
F = Age of father now
S = Age of son
***
F=9S
In 9 yrs:
F+9=Age of father now
S+9=Age of son now
..
F+9=3(S+9)
F+9=3S+27
9S+9=3S+27
6S=18
S=3
F=9S=27
Age of father now=27
Age of son now=3
