Let x=Jane's age
Then 3x=Thomas's age
and 3x+8=Michelle's age
Now we are told that if we add the three ages, we get 57, sooo:
x+3x+3x+8=57
7x+8=57 subtract 8 from each side
7x+8-8=57-8 collect like terms
7x=49
x=7---------------------Jane's age
3x=3*7=21-------------------Thomas's age
3x+8=21+8=29---------------Michelle's age
