Katy is 4 yrs older than her brother Brian and Chloe is 3 yrs younger than Brian. the sum of the ages of Brian, Chloe and Katy is 40. How old is Brian?

Brian: x
Katy: x+4
Chloe: x-3
So now it would look like:

x+x+4+x-3=40
3x+1=40
3x=39
x=13

So Brian is 13, Katy is 17, and Chloe is 10.
