so 8 years ago his age was x-8
in 10 years his age will be x+10
in 10 years, frederick will be thrice as old as he was 8 years ago
which means
x%2B10+=+3%28x-8%29
x%2B10+=+3x-24
10%2B24+=+3x-x
34+=+2x
x=17
so he is 17 years old now
