Question 748241: If Adam is 15 years younger than Alicia and in 6 years Alicia will be twice as old as Adam, how old is Adam?
Answer by timvanswearingen(106)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x represent Alicia's age now.
Adam's age would be x-15
In 6 years, Alicia will be x+6 and Adam will be x-15+6 or x-9.
At that time, Alicia will be twice as old as Adam.
Thus, 2 times Adam's age should be equal to Alicia's age:

Distribute:

Subtract x from both sides:

Add 18 to both sides:

Adam's age was represented by x-15, so plug in 24 for x:

Adam is 9 years old.
