Let s = speed of the car
then
(s+10) = speed of the bus
:
When the bus overtakes the car, they will have traveled the same distance
let that distance = d
:
Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
:
Car travel time - bus travel time = 1 hr
- = 1
multiply by s(s+10), results:
d(s+10) - ds = s(s+10)
ds + 10d - ds = s^2 + 10s
10d = s^2 + 10s
A quadratic equation
s^2 + 10s - 10d = 0
