If you take away 10 cakes from the first plate and there are 8 cookies left, then there must have only been 8 cookies on the first plate to begin with. That is because you didn't take away any cookies, you took away 10 cakes.. The rest depends on whether the Cookie Monster shows up or not. Maybe you should ask the Count...
