let x = the multiplier
then
3x = k's age
4x = d's age

= 12
multiply both sides by 2 and combine like terms
7x - 4 = 24
7x = 24 + 4
7x = 28
x = 28/7
x = 4
then
3*4 = 12 yrs is k's present age
