Tom is (x) years older than James.
If the sum of their ages is 64, how old will Tom be in 5 years?
Let t = Tom's age
then
(t-x) = James' age
:
t + (t-x) = 64
2t = 64 + x
t = Tom's present age
then
+ 5 = Tom's age in 5 yrs
