D-10+2R-10=40
2R-10+2R-10=40
4R-20=40
4R=40=20
4R=60
R=60/4
R=15 AGE OF RICK NOW.
D=2*15=30 AGE OF DAVE NOW.
PROOF:
30-10+2*15-10=40
20+30-10=40
50-10=40
40=40

Dave is twice as old as Rick. Ten years ago the sum of their ages was 40. How old are they now?

Let Rick's current age be R

Then Dave's current age = 2R

Ten years ago, Rick was R - 10, and Dave was: 2R - 10

Therefore, R - 10 + 2R - 10 = 40

3R - 20 = 40

3R = 60

R, or Rick's current age = , or

Dave's current age = 2(20), or
