Here is what I did:
J=John
S=son
J=40+S
J+S+10=90
(40+S)+S+10=90
50+2s=90
-50 -50
2s=40
s=20
J=40+S
J=40+20
J=60
This does not make sense though because if the son is 20 and John is 60 and 10 years later they are combined together to be 90 years old.
30+70=100
I am just now seeing a different way. Would is be J+S+20=90?

Yes it would!
Because in 10 years that will be added to both their ages! so now continue...
40+s)+s+20=90
60+2s=90
so
2s=30
s=15 and so j=55
