Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=daughter's age now; x-6=daughter's age 6 years ago
Then 3x=mother's age now; 3x-6=mother's age 6 years ago
Sooooo
(x-6)+(3x-6)=36
4x-12=36 add 12 to each side
4x-12+12=36+12 collect like terms
4x=48 divide each side by 4
x=12-----daughter's age now
3x=3*12=36------mother's age now
CK
12-6+36-6=36
6+30=36
36=36
Hope this helps---ptaylor
