A 15foot piece of string is cut into two pieces so that the longer piece is 3 feet longer than twice the shorter piece. If the shorter piece is x feet long find the lenght of both pieces.
----
Draw the picture.
whole piece = 15 feet
shorter piece = x feet
longer piece = 2x+3
----
Equation:
x + 2x+3 = 15
3x = 12
x = 4 ft. (shorter piece)
2x+3 = 11 ft. (longer piece)
