Write an equation for each statement.
:
jake is now one-quarter of his father age
j = f
or
f = 4j
:
in 7 years time his age he will be one-third the age of his father.
j + 7 = (f+7)
multiply both sides by 3, get rid of the fraction which annoys us.
3(j+7) = f + 7
3j + 21 = f + 7
3j = f + 7 - 21
3j = f - 14
replace f with 4j, (from the 1st statement)
3j = 4j - 14
14 = 4j - 3j
j = 14 yrs old is Jake's present age
