The sum of the ages of the 10 members 4 years ago equals the sum of the ages of the 10 members today.

The 10 members of the committe aged by 4 years for a total of 4*10 = 40 years.

The new member needs to be 40 years younger.

Change in age: 4*10 - x = 0 ; where x is the number of years younger the new member is compared to the old member.
