Your problem is missing a number. Either

Half of Dan's age added to 1/3 of Tom's age is 11. ?? years from now...

or

Half of Dan's age added to 1/3 of Tom's age is ??. 11 years from now...

You'll find that you don't have nearly as much difficulty with mathematics when you pay careful attention to the details.
