If y is the age of the man and he is twice as old as his x-year old son, we can symbolize the the man's age as 2x. We have to express everything in terms of x because we would need two equations if we use two variable.

We now setup the equation: 2x-x=32 ==> x=32
So, the man is 64 while his son is 32 years old.
