"Joel is two years older than Sarah.  Sarah is two years older than Michael. 

 

Let x and (x+2) and (x+4) represent Michael's, Sarah's and Joel's ages resepctively

Question states***The sum of their ages is 63

x+(x+2)+(x+4) = 63

   3x+6 = 63

     x = 19, Michael's age, Sarah 21 and Joel 23

  19 + 21 + 23 = 63

j + s + m = 63

Substitute and solve for "s":

(s+2) + s + (s-2) = 63

3s = 63

sarah's age = 21

Joel = s+2 = 23

Michael = s-2 = 19
