Write an equation for each statement:

"A year ago a mother was four times as old as her daughter."
m - 1 = 4(d-1)
m - 1 = 4d - 4
m = 4d - 4 + 1
m = 4d - 3
:
" Three years ago she was five times as old as her daughter."
m - 3 = 5(d-3)
m - 3 = 5d - 15
m = 5d - 15 + 3
m = 5d - 12
Replace (5d-12) for m in the 1st equation
5d - 12 = 4d - 3
5d - 4d = -3 + 12
d = 9 yrs old is the daughter
