At present, the mother is 24 which is 6 times older than her son. Therefore, her son is now 4.
x years in the future, the mother will be 3 times older:
24 + x = 3(4 + x)
24 + x = 12 + 3x
2x = 12
x = 6
Therefore, the mother will be 24+6 = 30 yrs old when this occurs (the son will be 10)
