Assume today is 1/16/2012 (where I am). Ignoring leap years, 10/18/2003 is exactly 8 years, 31+30+29 = 90 days ago (going backwards to December, November, October 16, then adding subtracting 2). 8 years is 8*365 = 2920, plus 90 = 3010.
Now to account for leap years, 2/29/2004 and 2/29/2008 were the only two "leap days" between 10/18/2003 and 1/16/2012. Therefore we add 2 to obtain 3012.
