Question 540975: Could someone please help me and break down the steps for these word problems please. I am not every good with word problems. thank u
1) A BAG OF DIMES AND QUARTERS IS WORTH $3.55. THERE ARE FOUR MORE THAN DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF DIMES AS QUATERS. HOW MANY OF THE COINS ARE DIMES?

2) LUC IS THREE YEARS MOE THAN TWICE KATE'S AGE. FOUR YEARS AGO THE SUM OF THEIR AGES WAS 25. HOW OLD IS LUC NOW?

3) THE PERIMETER OF A TRIANGLE IS 23 INCHES. THE LONGEST SIDE EXCEEDS THE SHORTER BY 7 INCHES WHILE THE THIRD SIDE IS TWICE THE SHORT SIDE. WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE LONGEST SIDE?

4) TWICE A NUMBER LESS FIVE IS LESS THAN THE NUMBER LESS THREE. WHAT'S THE VALUE OF THE NUMBER?

1) A BAG OF DIMES AND QUARTERS IS WORTH $3.55. THERE ARE FOUR MORE THAN DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF DIMES AS QUATERS. HOW MANY OF THE COINS ARE DIMES?
.
This will be good practice at turning a word problem into an equation. We know that dimes are worth 10 cents, and quarters 25 cents. And when you add the value, you get 355 cents. So 10 cents per dime, and 25 cents per quarter:
1--
Now what to do with the rest of the problem?? They tell you there are 4 more than double the number of dimes as quarters. That could be worded much better, but here's what it means. "4 more than double" means 2x+4. It says there are more dimes than quarters, so take the number of quarters times 2 (double) and add 4.
2-- to get the D's and Q's on the same side
To solve this and figure out just how many of each there are, you need to "stack" the equations and give them an equal number of either D's or Q's. Let's look at the equations when "stacked"
1--
2--
The easiest way forward is to multiply #2 by 10, so that there are 10 D's in each equation. Multiplying by 10 is much easier than the alternatives.
1--
2--
Now you have to subtract one from the other. With there being a negative 20 Q's in #2, don't get mixed up.

Now we know there were 7 quarters, and we can easily find the number of dimes by plugging 7 into either of our initial equations 1 or 2. Which would you prefer?
1-- or
2-- ?
I'd pick #2 all day.

.
2) LUC IS THREE YEARS MORE THAN TWICE KATE'S AGE. #1
FOUR YEARS AGO THE SUM OF THEIR AGES WAS 25. #2 =
HOW OLD IS LUC NOW?
.
Solve #2 for K, and plug into #1 where K is. Then solve for L.
.
.
3) "THE PERIMETER OF A TRIANGLE IS 23 INCHES."
3 Sides: A, B and C. Perimeter means the sum of the sides.

"THE LONGEST SIDE EXCEEDS THE SHORTER BY 7 INCHES"
Longest (we'll say A) exceeds shortest (say C) by 7 inches.

"WHILE THE THIRD SIDE IS TWICE THE SHORT SIDE."
Middle (say B) is twice shortest.

"WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE LONGEST SIDE?"
Substitute these equations into the 1st in place of A and B. Solve for C. Then use the value of C and formula 2 to solve for A.
.
.
4) TWICE A NUMBER LESS FIVE IS LESS THAN (<) THE NUMBER LESS THREE . WHAT'S THE VALUE OF THE NUMBER?
.

Solve for X.
