There is a very technical, "algebracy" way of solving this, but basically, you just need to see that to be twice as old as five means to be 5 x 2, which equals 10, and you need to subtract 2 from both of these numbers. 10 - 2 = 8 , 5 - 2 = 3. Melissa is 8. The cat is 3.
