Let a = his age today
then
(a-5) = his age 5 yrs ago
:
Write an equation for what it says:
:
"Five years ago, Allen was two years older than 5/6 of his age today."
a - 5 = a + 2
Multiply both sides by 6, get rid of the fraction, results
6(a-5) = 5a + 12
6a - 30 = 5a + 12
6a - 5a = 12 + 30
a = 42 yrs, his age today
:
:
See if that works in the statement
"Five years ago, Allen was two years older than 5/6 of his age today. "
42 - 5 = (42) + 2
37 = 35 + 2
