You can put this solution on YOUR website!
john is older than his cousin bill.
j > b
-------------------
bill's age is 3 years more than one half the age of john.
b = (1/2)j + 3
------
if the difference in their ages is less than four years
j - b < 4
-------------------
What is the oldest that john can be in whole number of years?
---
Substitute for "b" and solve for "j":
j - [(j/2)+3] < 4
(1/2)j -3 < 4
(1/2)j < 7
j < 14 yrs (John is less than 14 so the oldest John can be is 13).

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let Bill’s age be B, and John’s J. Then we can say that:
B = ½J + 3 -------- eq (i)
J – B < 4 --------- eq (ii)

Substitute (½J + 3) for B in eq (ii) to get:

J – (½J + 3) < 4
J - ½J – 3 < 4
J - ½J < 4 + 3
½J < 7

%28J%2F2%29+%3C+7

J, or John's age is < 14 ------- Cross-multiplying

Thus, the oldest John can be in whole-number of years is: highlight_green%2813%29

-------
Check
--------
Bill = ½J + 3 ------ Bill = ½(13) + 3 = 6.5 + 3 = 9.5

John – Bill < 4 ----- 13 – 9.5 < 4 (TRUE)
