Let m = mother's age

Write an equation for each statement.
:
"A girl is 1/3 her mothers age."
g = m
:
"The differences in their ages is 20 years."
m - g = 20
From the 1st equation, replace g with m
m - m = 20
m = 20
multiply both sides by 3, results:
2m = 3*20
2m = 60
