in the 2nd equation, remember that the daughter is also 18 years older ___ m + 18 = 2(d + 18)

m = 2d + 18

substituting ___ 2d + 18 = d^2 + 3

0 = d^2 - 2d - 15

factoring ___ 0 = (d - 5)(d + 3)

d + 3 = 0 ___ d = -3 ___ negative value not realistic

d - 5 = 0 ___ d = 5
