I'm 27 years old. In how many years will my future age be 16 years more than my past age when I was the same number of years younger?


Let x = the number of years it will be until my age will be my future age.

Another way of wording the problem is:

I am 27 and in x years I will be 16 years older than I was x years ago.
Find x.

Then 27+x will be my age when I am x years older.

and 27-x was my age when I was x years younger.

The equation comes from

                 FUTURE AGE = PAST AGE + 16
                  (27+x)    =  (27-x)  + 16

Solve that and get x = 8 years.

Checking:

I'm 27 and in 8 years I'll be 35, which is 16 years older than
I was 8 years ago, which was 19, because 19+16=35.
