Let Kim's age be K years

Since Tom is 3 years older than kim, then Tom's age is K + 3, and since Joe is twice as old as tom, Joe is 2(K + 3), or (2K + 6) years-old

Since their ages sum to 53, then we can say that:

K + K + 3 + 2K + 6 = 53

4K = 44

K, or Kim's age is or 11.

Since Joe is (2K + 6) years-old, then Joe is 2(11) + 6, or years-old.
