Question 33108: I am home-schooling this semester for the first time. I am using the curriculum from Alpha and Omega Academy (SOS Schoolhouse). I know I can do these problems, I am just missing some key factor.
The question is this:
Two years ago a father was four times as old as his son. Three years from now, the father will be only three times as old as the son. How old is each now?
I tried:
son=x
dad=4(x-2)
x + 4(x-2) = 3 + 3x
x + 4x - 8 = 3 +3x
5x -8 = 3+3x
2x=11
(As you can see, this is wrong.If you could help me with this one, I can get the rest, I hope. Thanks!!!!)
Answer by mukhopadhyay(490) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
son' current age =x
dad's age as of two years ago = 4(x-2)
dad's age now = 4(x-2) + 2
4(x-2) + 2 + 3 = 3(x+3)
=> 4x - 3 = 3x + 9
=> x = 12
Son is now 12 years old and dad is 42 years.
